Industrial electrician jobs, in the search results, mix three different kinds of work. One is an IBEW inside wireman call on a plant, a powerhouse, or a shutdown. One is a maintenance job inside a factory that never hits a hiring hall. One is a state license class named "industrial electrician," which is narrower than a journeyman license and often will not transfer. The page that matches a traveling union electrician is the first one.
The cards below are three halls whose recent boards named plant or industrial work. Openings move. The job call map and the Hot Spots dashboard are the current picture.
What an industrial call actually says
A traveler call does not hire you as the plant's maintenance electrician. It hires you onto a contractor's crew for construction, a shutdown, or a build-out. The posting then adds the plant's rules: OSHA 10, a background check, a drug screen, sometimes a CDL, sometimes medium-voltage experience.
Three dated examples:
- Local 429, October 5, 2026: Miller Electrical asked for 2 journeymen at TVA in Cumberland City, Tennessee, on 5-10s plus an 8-hour day, at scale, and named OSHA 10, industrial experience, and a background check. The same scrape's larger call was Newtron at Google in Clarksville, 19 journeymen, 7-10s, with $120 a day when the job is 50 miles out. That Google call did not use the word industrial. The TVA call did. Read the line. Details are in the Local 429 Nashville guide.
- Local 613, September 20, 2026: the Atlanta board mixed data centers with Plant Yates in Newnan. Most inside calls were at the $42.00 journeyman scale. Plant Yates industrial calls under the SCMMA agreement listed $42.18. The Local 613 guide has the contractor names from that day.
- Local 369, October 5, 2026: the Louisville board was Ford Louisville Assembly Plant work, at the $45.00 scale, on 7-10s and 7-12s. An assembly plant is industrial construction. It is still a hall call at scale, not a maintenance salary. The Local 369 guide has the contractor split.
Pay on these calls is the hall's journeyman scale unless the posting prints "over scale" or a per diem. Do not budget the overtime the ad mentions until the contractor is actually working it. A 7-10s schedule is 70 hours on paper. It is not a promise.
The license with the same name
Texas is the clean example. TDLR's out-of-state page, checked October 6, 2026, has journeyman and master reciprocity lists and then says it has no reciprocal agreements for any other license type. That includes the journeyman industrial electrician license. A Texas industrial card is not the journeyman card those reciprocity states are talking about, and a journeyman card from another state does not become a Texas industrial license by itself. The lists are in the Texas reciprocity guide.
Other states split the words differently. Tennessee does not issue a statewide journeyman license at all. Nashville's large industrial calls sit under a contractor's electrical license, and the state's Limited Licensed Electrician card is for work under $25,000 in places that accept it. Nashville does not. That is written up in the Local 429 guide linked above.
If a call names "industrial experience," it is asking what you have built: generation, process, medium voltage, shutdowns. It is not asking you to hold a license class called industrial unless the posting says so. If the posting names a license class, believe the class name and check that state's board. The electrician license reciprocity guide is the map for journeyman transfers. It will not list an industrial classification that the state left off the agreement.
Maintenance work is a different hire
A plant advertisement for an industrial electrician on a jobs board is often a direct hire: one employer, a shift, a badge, and a maintenance department. That job does not run through Book 2. Taking it does not follow the referral rules of the hall, and it can conflict with a union contract if the plant is signatory and the hire skips the hall. If the work is union construction or a union shutdown, the call belongs on the hall's board. If it is a plant HR posting, it is a different employer and a different set of rules. Call the hall before you treat a maintenance ad as a traveler call.
The steps for signing a hall's out-of-work book are in how to travel IBEW Book 2. Industrial calls use that same referral. They add the plant's gate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an industrial electrician job for a traveling IBEW member?
A contractor call for construction or shutdown work at a plant, powerhouse, or similar site, referred by the hall. It is not automatically a maintenance job on the plant's payroll.
Do industrial calls pay more than the journeyman scale?
Only when the posting says so. The October 5 Local 429 TVA call and the October 5 Local 369 Ford calls were written at scale. Local 613's September 20 Plant Yates industrial calls listed $42.18 against a $42.00 inside scale.
Does a journeyman license cover industrial work?
On the tools, the call and the state where the job sits decide. In Texas, the journeyman industrial electrician license is a separate class, and TDLR does not offer reciprocity for it.
What do these calls usually ask you to carry?
The dated calls above named OSHA 10, background checks, drug tests, and, on one Local 429 line, industrial experience. Medium-voltage experience shows up on some plant calls and not others. Read the call.
Is overtime part of the wage?
No. A schedule such as 7-10s or 5-10s plus an 8 describes the hours the contractor hopes to work. Scale times those hours is a guess until the hours happen.
Where should I look for union industrial calls?
The hall boards, not a generic jobs site. Start with the live cards on this page, then the map.
